What Is Gate
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven IIT’s at Roorkee, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Bombay on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.
The GATE score of a candidate reflects the relative performance level of a candidate. The score is used for admissions to various post-graduate education programs (e.g. Masters of Engineering, Master of Technology, Doctor of Philosophy) in Indian higher education institutes, with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other government agencies. Recently, GATE scores are also being used by several Indian public sector undertakings (i.e., government-owned companies) for recruiting graduate engineers in entry-level positions. It is one of the most competitive examinations in India. GATE is also recognized by various countries o outside India, such as Germany, Singapore.
Candidates with a valid GATE Score can avail the benefit of GATE financial assistantship. A stipend of INR 12,400-24,000 per month is provided to MTech students for 8 hrs of work per week. A monthly stipend of INR 25,000 for up to 2 years is provided to PhD students. For the next 2 years, the financial assistance may raises by INR 3,000.
Additional assistantships in the form of scholarships, fellowships, etc. may be available through other organizations, such as CSIR, DAE, etc.
In GATE examination, candidates can apply for only one of the 23 papers listed in the table given below. Candidates are expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of their qualifying degree.
